Joni Kay Culver, also known as Joni Ernst, is an American politician and former military officer. She was born in Red Oak, Iowa, USA, on July 1, 1970. Ernst is the junior U.S. senator from Iowa and has been in office since 2015. She backs the Republican Party. Ernst was the first woman from Iowa to represent Iowa in Congress and the first woman who had served in battle to be elected to the Senate.
Ernst was in the Iowa Army National Guard from 1993 to 2015, before she became a politician. Her first degree was in psychology from Iowa State University in 1992. Her second degree was in public administration from Columbus State University in 1995. Ernst also went on a farm exchange to the USSR when she was in college.
